The Gambian Ministry of Justice has hailed the conviction of former death squad member, Michael Sang Correa, as a significant milestone in the global pursuit of justice for victims of human rights violations.
In an official statement, the Ministry expressed sincere appreciation to the United States government for its “unwavering commitment to justice,” with particular praise for the prosecution team behind the case.
The statement noted that the verdict aligns with the Gambian government’s ongoing commitment to uphold the rule of law and ensure accountability for crimes committed under the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.
It further underscored that the ruling sends a powerful message: perpetrators of human rights abuses will find no safe haven.
The Ministry also revealed plans to establish a Special Prosecutor’s Office dedicated to trying crimes identified by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).
Michael Sang Correa was found guilty on six counts of torture and one count of conspiracy to commit torture. He faces up to 20 years imprisonment for each count—totalling a potential sentence of 120 years.
