General Tiani to Guide Niger Through Five-Year Transition Following New Constitution

Niger’s Transitional President, General Abdourahamane Tiani will officially assume the role of President of Niger for the next five years under a new constitutional framework set to be launched on March 25, 2025.

This transition follows the National Refoundation Conference, which proposed major governance changes, including the dissolution of political parties and the adoption of a new Refoundation Charter.

The official ceremony at the Mahatma Gandhi Center in Niamey marks the start of concrete implementation of these resolutions, nearly two years after the military takeover.

The new charter, which replaces Ordinance No. 2023-02 of July 28, 2023, sets out governance structures centered on fundamental values, institutional reforms, and leadership restructuring.

During the March 10 presentation of the final report, General Tiani described the transition as “a step in a march that began in 2023 in Agadez,” highlighting its significance in reshaping Niger’s political future.

The changes also come amid regional and international shifts, including a break from traditional allies and closer ties with Russia.

As Niger prepares for this historic transition, all regional governors have been instructed to ensure full participation in the March 25 ceremony, signaling the government’s commitment to executing the new framework.
