Ghana’s President Voids Chief Justice’s Leaked Letter with Disappointment

Ghana’s President, John Mahama, has expressed disappointment after a letter from Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was leaked on social media before reaching his desk.

The President’s concerns were outlined in an official statement signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President.

The letter, dated March 27, 2025, was widely circulated online before the President had the opportunity to review its contents.

In response to the breach of confidentiality, the Office of the President has decided to mark all official correspondence related to the matter as ‘restricted’ to prevent future leaks.

The leaked letter was part of ongoing proceedings following petitions seeking the removal of Justice Torkornoo. President Mahama had granted her 10 days to provide a preliminary response. However, the premature release of her correspondence has raised concerns about judicial protocol and transparency.

Under Ghana’s Constitution, the removal of a Chief Justice follows a formal process outlined in Article 146, which stipulates that a committee must be appointed by the President, in consultation with the Council of State, to investigate any petition filed against the Chief Justice. The proceedings are to be conducted in camera, ensuring confidentiality until a final decision is made.

This incident has sparked further debate about the handling of sensitive judicial matters and the importance of safeguarding official communications.
