CONAKRY (CONVERSEER) – The Guinean National Transitional Council (NTC) has finalised preparations for the official handover of the draft Constitution to President Mamadi Doumbouya, scheduled for 28th June at the People’s Palace.
This milestone comes amid efforts to accelerate the transition timeline, with a constitutional referendum now set for 21st September 2025. Adopted unanimously by the 80 NTC members on 9th April, the draft is the product of a participatory process refined by a committee of experts and is intended to lay the foundation for a new institutional framework.
The 23rd June strategic meeting, chaired by Dansa Kourouma, aimed to finalise protocol and logistics for the ceremony, seen as a crucial step toward restoring constitutional order.
This development follows mounting pressure on the transitional authorities, who had initially pledged to complete the transition by the end of 2024.
The promise, reiterated by President Doumbouya in his New Year address, has now gained structure through the setting of election dates and the arrival of electoral kits to update the voter register, including for the diaspora.
However, critics like opposition figure Lansana Faya Millimouno argue that the electoral calendar appears rushed and lacks inclusive political dialogue.
Despite these concerns, the 28th June event is intended to boost public engagement with the draft constitution, with active involvement planned from women, youth, and civil society representatives.
