CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – Gunmen have abducted Mark Ofre Okwohe, a 400-level medical student of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Calabar, Cross River State.
According to human rights activist, Citizen Agba Jalingo, Okwohe was kidnapped on Sunday night.
Though the details of his abduction are still sketchy, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, Comr. Blessing Alims Ojisor, has urged students to be vigilant.
“This deeply disturbing incident underscores the rising insecurity threatening the peace and welfare of our students both on and off campus. The SUG condemns, in the strongest terms, this cowardly and inhumane act, and we are working closely with the university administration and security agencies to ensure his safe and prompt return.
“A call to action through humbly urging all students to remain vigilant,” a statement signed by Alims-Ojisor stated.
It added, “If you have any information that could assist in locating Mark Ofre Okwohe, please report immediately.
“We must stand together in solidarity and caution. Security is everyone’s responsibility, and the safety of one is the safety of all!”
A statement from Effiong Eyo, Public Relations Officer of the institution, confirmed the abduction, saying, “Preliminary investigations conducted by the University reveal that the student was last seen in his room (106) at Hall 2 Annex on May 31, 2025, as the alleged incident did not occur on campus.
“The Hall Chairman and the student’s roommate share this view, and we are working closely with other relevant security agencies to gather more information and ensure a swift resolution of this matter”, he said.
Confirming the report also, SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, said the command is aware of the incident and is working with its units, including the State Anti Cultists, to secure the release of the victim.
