The long-awaited implementation of the Niger National Conference’s resolutions is set to take place today at the Mahatma Gandhi Center in Niamey, marking a critical step in the country’s ongoing political transition.
The event, organized by the Ministry of the Interior, follows the submission of the final National Conference report to General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), on March 10.
Governors across Niger have been directed to ensure the participation of regional representatives in this landmark occasion.
Among the most significant decisions to be officially enacted are – a five-year transition period (60-month “Refoundation period”), the dissolution of existing political parties and the creation of a new institutional framework tailored to Niger’s socio-cultural realities and the adoption of a new Refoundation Charter, replacing Ordinance No. 2023-02 of July 28, 2023.
Other significant decisions include – a governance structure based on three key principles: fundamental values, institutional missions, and structured leadership and the Charter of Refoundation, which carries constitutional value, lays the foundation for a new political order in Niger, outlining the powers and responsibilities of the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), the Government of Refoundation, and the Consultative Council of Refoundation (CCR).
The National Conference has also confirmed General Abdourahamane Tiani as President of the Republic for the duration of the transition, with a recommendation to elevate him to the rank of Army General.
With today’s ceremony, Niger officially embarks on its five-year transition, setting the stage for a radical restructuring of its political system and governance model.
