Kano Government Clarifies: Appeal Court Did Not Halt Sanusi’s Reinstatement

2019: Sanusi pleads with Nigerians not to elect uneducated leaders again

The Kano State government has addressed misinterpretations surrounding the recent Court of Appeal judgment on the ongoing Emirship dispute and urged the public to rely on accurate legal facts.

Reports emerged on Friday that a three-member panel of the appellate court headed by Justice Okon Abang stopped the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

The state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, who addressed journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Kano on Saturday, stressed that the appeal court in its January 10 ruling upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law of 2019 and overturned an earlier decision by the Federal High Court.

However, he noted that Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi has since appealed the verdict at the Supreme Court.

Dederi, according to a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, clarified that the recent stay of execution granted by the appellate court did not invalidate its judgment but served as a procedural measure to maintain the status quo until the Supreme Court issues a final ruling.

He said: “The Kano State Government urges the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid any form of provocation.

“The government has directed its legal team to review the proceedings and determine the next legal steps.”

Dederi also commended the people of the state for their patience and understanding and called for continued prayers for peace and progress in the state and the nation.
