Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo has shed light on the tactical direction that new head coach Eric Chelle intends to implement ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
In a recent interview with Arise TV, Omeruo revealed that Chelle has emphasized the importance of a high-pressing style, with the aim of unsettling opponents early in the game and not giving them time to build confidence.
“From my conversation with the coach, I know we are going to press. We don’t have to give the other team confidence to build the game,” Omeruo explained.
“When we let them play, they get confident. We have to put them on their toes from the start of the game. We have to press them high.”
Omeruo also acknowledged that the new tactical approach will be physically demanding, particularly with the challenges posed by varying weather conditions. However, he stressed that this pressing strategy is essential for success in the qualifiers.
“It will be demanding from the players, especially with the weather, but we have to do it because that’s the only way to win these games. We cannot sit back, let them play, and come at us. We have to approach the game like we’re here to win,” Omeruo emphasized.

Despite the intensity of the team’s preparations, Omeruo will not feature in the upcoming qualifiers.
The former Chelsea defender is currently sidelined due to a lack of match fitness after mutually parting ways with Kasımpaşa. Omeruo, now a free agent, remains focused on regaining full fitness and securing his next club.
