in Metro

A fish seller identified as Mrs Rosemary Ofem has been kidnapped in Cross River State and her kidnappers are demanding five million naira (N5m) as ransom.

CONVERSEER gathered that Mrs Ofem was kidnapped on Tuesday (Sept. 26) at Ikang, Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state.

According to a source, she was kidnapped alongside others while on a boat to where they buy fish.

Mrs Ofem who is the breadwinner of her family left Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of the state to buy fish, only to be kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

A family source told CONVERSEER on Monday (Oct. 2) that “Mrs Rosemary Ofem went to buy fish last week Tuesday (Sept. 26) at Ikang to sell in Ugep as she usually does but did not return, neither was her phone line connecting.

“Yesterday (Oct. 1), they offered a special service for her in the church she worships; Church of God Mission, Ugep.

“The kidnappers called this morning (Oct. 2), urging her to use English to communicate with her family, since she is from Ugep.

“They [kidnappers] demanded 5 million naira despite the woman’s cry and plea. Where is she going to get 5 million naira from, when it is only fish she sells to feed her family? Where is her husband going to get that kind amount of money? She is even the breadwinner of the family.

“She wasn’t alone. She was kidnapped from a boat with others who also went to buy fish”, the family source said.

When CONVERSEER contacted SP Irene Ugbo, Cross River State Police Spokesperson on the phone on Monday, she did not take or return her calls at the time of this report.
