Labour Party Reacts to Defection of 4 House Members to APC

in Politics

Abuja, Nigeria – The Labour Party (LP) has expressed concern over the defection of four of its members in the House of Representatives to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a press release issued by its leadership, the party attributed the development to alleged misconduct by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the actions of its former executives.

The party accused INEC of compromising its integrity by recognising what it referred to as “former and expired officers” led by Julius Abure, despite their tenure expiring on 10th June 2023.

The LP also alleged that INEC’s actions violated section 223 of the Nigerian Constitution and contributed to internal party confusion.

While an investigation panel has been set up to examine the lawmakers’ defection, the Labour Party leadership assured members and supporters that the matter is being handled within legal frameworks.

The party reiterated that its ongoing legal battle against INEC over constitutional compliance is not a leadership dispute but a constitutional issue.

The statement, approved by Acting National Chairman Prince Prof. Ifagbemi Awamaridi, called for calm among members as they await the results of the investigation and the court’s ruling.

The party remains optimistic about the eventual enforcement of constitutional provisions.
