Lagos Assembly Elects Mojisola Meranda as First Female Speaker Following Obasa’s Impeachment

Lagos, Nigeria – The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, replacing him with Mojisola Meranda, the representative of Apapa I.

Meranda’s election marks a historic moment as she becomes the first female Speaker of the Lagos State Legislature.

Born on 16 August 1980 in Lagos, Meranda has an extensive political and professional background. She attended Randle Primary School and Anglican Girls Grammar School before earning degrees from Lagos State University and the University of Lagos.

Her career began as a political aide in the Apapa Local Government Area (2008–2014). She also held leadership roles in the private sector, serving as the office manager at Cirrus Nigeria Limited and as managing director/CEO of Worthline International Services Limited, a company she founded.

Meranda’s political journey started with the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and evolved through the Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and eventually the All Progressives Congress (APC). She was first elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2015.

In the 8th Assembly, she chaired the House Committee on Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) and later the Committee on Establishment, Training, Pension, and Public Service. She served as Chief Whip in the 9th Assembly and was elected Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly before her elevation to Speaker.

Meranda’s historic appointment signifies a significant shift in Lagos State’s legislative leadership. Her experience and leadership roles within the assembly position her to steer the house effectively in her new role.
