Lawan dispels speculation about switching to SDP

Former Senate President Ahmad Lawan has refuted claims suggesting he is planning to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP), calling such reports “baseless and without merit.”

In a statement issued on Sunday, his media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, reaffirmed Lawan’s loyalty to the ruling party, emphasizing that he remains deeply committed to the APC’s principles.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains a steadfast and loyal member of the APC, a party he has proudly associated with and contributed to since its formation,” the statement read.

Lawan, a veteran lawmaker with 25 years in the National Assembly, has never switched political allegiance since entering politics. Tabiowo highlighted Lawan’s political journey, from his election into the House of Representatives in 1999 to his transition into the Senate in 2007, all under the umbrella of the All People’s Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). The ANPP was among the three parties that merged to form the APC in 2013.

“Senator Lawan is a firm believer in the vision and principles of the APC and continues to work tirelessly with other party leaders to strengthen the party and advance its agenda,” Tabiowo added.

Beyond party politics, Lawan expressed strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, endorsing its policies and reforms aimed at transforming Nigeria.

Dismissing the rumors as the handiwork of political mischief-makers, he urged the public and party faithful to disregard the speculation.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan remains focused on his responsibilities as a lawmaker and leader. His commitment to supporting the APC-led administration in delivering good governance and sustainable development to Nigerians remains unwavering,” the statement concluded.
