Malawian-born Chioma Okafor commits international football career to Nigeria

LAGOS (CONVERSEER) – The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has confirmed that USA-based footballer, Chioma Okafor, has chosen to represent Nigeria at international level, following a decision made in consultation with her family.

In an official statement issued on 18th June 2025, FAM disclosed that it had engaged Okafor’s parents in discussions regarding her international future. The outcome of those talks confirmed that the highly rated striker, currently studying and playing for the University of Connecticut in the United States, will commit her football career to the Nigerian national team.

Chioma, who was born in Malawi to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, holds eligibility to play for both nations but has never featured for Malawi at any level.

Earlier this year, she was named in the squad for Malawi’s Scorchers ahead of their international friendly matches against Zambia in February. However, she did not honour the invitation due to academic obligations in the US.

Following this, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) formally notified FAM of Okafor’s decision to pledge her allegiance to Nigeria.

“FAM engaged the parents and the player, who have confirmed her intention and commitment to represent Nigeria,” the association stated.

Okafor is widely considered a promising talent with a growing reputation in collegiate football, and her decision is seen as a significant addition to Nigeria’s women’s football team, the Super Falcons.

Her commitment to Nigeria further strengthens the country’s player pool as it continues to scout and integrate dual-nationality talents into its squad.
