Mali-Algeria Tensions Escalate After Drone Incident – West African Voice Network

Diplomatic tensions have escalated between Mali and Algeria following the destruction of a Malian drone near the border town of Tinzouatène in the Kidal region.

The incident, which occurred overnight from March 31 to April 1, 2025, was condemned by Mali’s transitional government as “blatant aggression.”

Malian officials claim the drone, designated TZ-98D, was brought down by missile fire on Malian territory—9.5 km south of the Algerian border—dismissing Algeria’s claims of airspace violation. In response, Mali summoned the Algerian ambassador, withdrew from the Joint Military Staff Committee (CEMOC), and announced plans to file a complaint with international bodies.

Mali also accused Algeria of undermining counterterrorism operations by destroying the drone, which was reportedly tracking armed groups responsible for attacks in the region.

The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) backed Mali, condemning the attack as an act of aggression against all AES member states.

The bloc recalled its ambassadors from Algeria and reiterated its commitment to regional security, accusing Algeria of violating international law and jeopardizing anti-terrorism efforts.
