New Lagos Police Chief Commits to Ensuring State Assembly Security and Clarifies Misconceptions

The newly appointed Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has assured residents that the police will continue to provide security at the Lagos State House of Assembly, as they have always done.

Jimoh made this declaration on Tuesday while addressing concerns about the security situation at the Assembly complex.

Responding to questions about whether the police’s role as the lead agency for internal security had been overshadowed by another agency, Jimoh dismissed the claim, emphasizing that the police have consistently fulfilled their duties.

“No, it is not true that the police were not on-site to perform our duties. Our men have always provided security there but have remained outside, where the law permits us to stay,” Jimoh stated.

He further clarified that the police have no jurisdiction inside the legislative chamber itself. “We do not have any business in the Hallowed Chamber, and that is why our men were not there,” he added.

Jimoh’s appointment as Lagos State Commissioner of Police was announced on Monday by the Police Service Commission. A seasoned officer with a wealth of experience, Jimoh previously served as the Force Public Relations Officer from January 2017 to January 2019.

Throughout his career, he has held several key positions, including Deputy Commissioner of the Airport Police, Deputy Commissioner of Finance and Administration, Deputy Commissioner of General Investigation, and Commissioner of Police for the Ports Authority, Eastern Ports. His extensive background in law enforcement positions him as a capable leader to address the security challenges in Lagos State.

Jimoh’s assurance comes amid heightened concerns about security at the Lagos State House of Assembly, following recent incidents that raised questions about the role of various security agencies. The new CP emphasized that the police remain committed to maintaining order and protecting public institutions.

“Our primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of all residents and institutions in Lagos State. We will continue to work diligently to uphold the law and protect the people,” Jimoh said.

Jimoh also highlighted the importance of collaboration between security agencies to ensure effective policing. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

“Security is a collective effort. We call on all Lagosians to support the police and other security agencies by providing timely information that can help us prevent crime and maintain peace,” he stated.
