  • Insecurity: C’River Assembly calls for increased police presence in Akamkpa

The State House of Assembly has urged the State Government to impress on the Nigerian Police Force to increase manpower in the Area Command of old Netim and the two police divisions in Uyanga and Akamkpa towns.

The House also wants the State Government to provide operational vehicles as well as arms and ammunition for the Area.

The Legislators emphasised that these measures are critical to safeguarding the lives and property of citizens in the Akamkpa Local Government Area, which recently was invaded by Cameroonian Ambazonia Freedom Fighters.

The issue was raised as a matter of urgent public importance by the Member representing Akamkpa I State Constituency, Hon. Okon Nyong Owuna.

Owuna informed the Assembly that in the past two weeks, there have been cult clashes and an increase in the activities of Ambazonia Freedom Fighters in Akamkpa and its environs, which resulted in the death of four persons.

Owuna further informed the Assembly that the activities of the Ambazonia Freedom Fighters have led to an increase in the acquisition of arms and ammunition by cult groups in Akamkpa LGA, adding that expatriate quarry workers, amongst other business people, were fleeing the area for fear of losing their lives.

“Akamkpa LGA is an industrial area with multiple quarries and industries, it provides over 60% of the States IGR. In the past two weeks, there have been cult clashes and an increase in the activities of Ambazonia Freedom Fighters in Akamkpa urban, resulting in the death of about four persons,” Owuna explained.

The Member representing Obanlikwu State Constituency, Hon. Ashakia Pius Ashas, stated that the menace of the Ambazonia Freedom Fighters is not peculiar to Akamkpa only but in most border communities. He cited an instance where they attacked the Belegete community in his constituency and murdered one of the chiefs of the community.

Other lawmakers, in their contributions, noted that the Ambazonia Freedom Fighters are very deadly, adding that security agencies should be deployed to the area to dislodge them.

The lawmakers stressed that the State’s borders are porous thereby giving free access to migrants from neighboring countries. They sued for improved border patrol by security agencies to prevent invasion of border towns by militant groups, which, amongst other ills, affects farming and food production and increases unemployment.

In his remark the Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem condemned the incident while urging security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further loss of lives and property.

  • US, Europe condemn Israel’s attacks on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

The United States and European powers urged Israel on Friday to ensure the safety of UN peacekeepers after four were injured in Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon this week.

US President Joe Biden said he was “absolutely” asking Israel to stop firing at the peacekeepers, after the second attack on the force’s personnel in two days.

In a phone call with his Israeli counterpart, US defence chief Lloyd Austin stressed “the importance of ensuring the safety” of the United Nations force, known as UNIFIL, the Pentagon said.

After weeks of intensifying assaults on the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Austin also called on Israel to “pivot from military operations to a diplomatic pathway as soon as feasible.”

Israel came under heavy criticism in Europe, too.

In a joint statement, the leaders of Italy, France and Spain expressed “outrage” at Israel’s “unjustifiable” attacks on peacekeepers and demanded they “immediately come to an end.”

The German Foreign Office called it “unacceptable.”

Separate strikes kill two Lebanese soldiers, hurt UN peacekeepers
Two Lebanese soldiers were killed and two UN peacekeepers injured in apparent Israeli strikes on Friday.

The Lebanese army said Israeli forces had attacked one of its outposts in the village of Kafra in southern Lebanon, killing two soldiers and injuring three others.

Najib Mikati, the caretaker prime minister of Lebanon, condemned the attack, calling it a “crime against Lebanon.”

The Israeli military has yet to comment.

The weak Lebanese military is not a declared enemy of Israel, and Lebanese state forces are seen as powerless against the massive influence wielded by Hezbollah in the south of the country.

Earlier, the UN peacekeeping mission said that its Naqoura headquarters were hit once again by explosions, wounding two more members of the force.

This was the second attack on the facilities of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 48 hours. On Thursday, two soldiers were injured after an Israeli tank fired at a watchtower.

UNIFIL said there were two blasts near an observation post in Naqoura on Friday. The force said one of the two injured peacekeepers was taken to hospital in nearby Tyre.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed its troops had opened fire, saying they were responding to “an immediate threat against them.”

The IDF said an initial investigation found that the UNIFIL post was struck as the soldiers tried to hit a target 50 metres away from the peacekeepers.

The explosions came as several protective walls also collapsed at a UN post near Labbouneh, not far from the Lebanese-Israeli border, after an Israeli military bulldozer hit them and Israeli tanks approached the post.

UNIFIL in the cross-hairs of Israel’s war on Hezbollah in Lebanon

The UN mission monitors the border area between Lebanon and Israel. More than 10,000 UN soldiers from more than 50 countries are involved. Many of the UN troops come from Indonesia, Italy and India.

Israeli troops had fired on the UNIFIL headquarters on Thursday, injuring two soldiers. Israel’s army acknowledged responsibility but said that Hezbollah is operating near the UNIFIL positions.

Hezbollah has been launching missiles at Israel from Lebanon since the start of the Gaza war a year ago. According to the militia, it is acting in solidarity with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Israel significantly stepped up its military operations against Hezbollah in September, when pagers and walkie-talkies used by the group’s members exploded across Lebanon and Syria. Israeli troops launched a ground offensive in early October and escalated airstrikes, including on Beirut.

Sixty people have been killed and 168 others injured in Israeli attacks in Lebanon over the past 24 hours, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported on Friday evening.

There was no breakdown of casualties among civilians or members of the Iran-allied Hezbollah movement.

Fifty-seven Israeli airstrikes were recorded in various parts of Lebanon over the past 24 hours, mainly in the south near the Israeli border, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and Bekaa in eastern Lebanon.

Building damage after drone attack near Tel Aviv

A building in the Israeli seaside resort of Herzliya, north of Tel Aviv, was damaged following an attack by two drones from Lebanon, the military said late Friday. No one was injured or killed in the drone attack.

The military said that Israeli air defences detected two hostile drones on their way to Israel, one of which was intercepted.

They did not specify whether the building damage was caused by the other drone or by debris falling from interceptors. Interceptors are the missiles of the air defence systems designed to shoot down enemy projectiles in the air.

The drones were presumably launched by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The Israeli military said that on Friday alone, 230 projectiles were fired from Lebanon into Israel.

  • WWII bomb in Cologne detonated in a controlled explosion

The western German city of Cologne has successfully carried out its most complex bomb disposal operation since World War II.

A 1,000-kilogramme US WWII bomb was detonated in a controlled manner on Friday evening, the city administration said.

The experts from the explosive ordnance disposal service were initially only able to defuse one of the bomb’s two impact fuses in the afternoon. As a result, the unexploded bomb had to be detonated in a controlled explosion, which required heavy lorries to bring in large quantities of sand first.

Shortly before the conclusion of the operation, the city issued a precautionary warning: “The operation leadership points out that a muffled bang from the controlled explosion will be audible to the public beyond the 500-metre danger zone.”

Approximately 6,400 residents also had to leave their homes in what city officials described as the most complex evacuation of its kind in Cologne since 1945. Traffic and public transport were also diverted from the area.

A city spokesman said that around 1,300 people were involved in total, including staff from the public order office, police officers, firefighters, rescue personnel and 800 volunteers.

Two of three hospitals in the area were fully evacuated on Wednesday and Thursday, the city said. In total, about 640 patients were affected, with most being transferred to other hospitals.

However, the intensive care patients at the third location, the Merheim Hospital, were relocated to a so-called safe house on the site itself.

This had been specially secured with thick wooden panels in the unlikely event that the bomb exploded during the disposal process.

The device was found on a site where a new health campus is planned to be built.

Bomb disposals themselves are a common occurrence in Cologne, as the city was one of the most heavily bombed during World War II.

On the night of May 30-31, 1942, the first “1,000-bomber raid” by the British Royal Air Force on a German metropolis took place.

The German writer Thomas Mann, then living in exile in California, noted at the time: “Terrible air raid on Cologne, 1,000 aeroplanes. Destruction and panic.”

Approximately 20,000 people from Cologne lost their lives in bombings, and by the end, almost only the cathedral remained standing in the city centre

  • Germany needs a larger army, says Parliament defence chief

Germany’s armed forces, the Bundeswehr, need up to 35,000 more soldiers to meet NATO’s new defence requirements, according to the head of the parliamentary defence committee.

Joining calls for a stronger army to face a growing threat from Russia, Marcus Faber, the chairman of the defence committee of the Bundestag, on Saturday backed plans to raise the number of German combat brigades in NATO from 82 to 131 from 2031.

Instead of three divisions with 65,000 soldiers, the German army would then need five divisions, which would correspond to a total of around 100,000 soldiers, Faber told German media group Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND).

“That would take about 10 years,” said Faber, calling for Germany’s annual spending on defence to be increased from 2% to 3% of GDP.

The Bundeswehr currently has a total of 180,000 soldiers.

Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has repeatedly called for a significant further increase in defence spending and has also made it clear that more soldiers are needed for defence capability.

Pistorius’ ministry is currently working out the details of a new proposal for compulsory military service.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s continuing war in Ukraine, German NATO General Christian Badia on Friday also told media that the country’s defence spending should approach 3% of GDP, well above the NATO guideline of 2%.

Badia, a commander in Germany’s air force, is also responsible for the continuing development and adaptation of the NATO military alliance.

  • Tinubu orders Police to arrest Rivers crisis

President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.

President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.

In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.

According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, on Monday, Tinubu urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions.

President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.

While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions.

President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism.

He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.

According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.

  • Rivers LG Election: IGP replies Governor Fabura

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has responded to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s allegations over the hijacking of the election materials meant for the Rivers State Local Government election.

The IGP’s reply is contained in the press release below:

    PRESS RELEASE

RIVERS ELECTIONS: NPF ACTIONS IN CONFORMITY WITH SUBSISTING COURT ORDER, REMAIN POLITICALLY NEUTRAL

The Nigeria Police Force has noted with concern the recent statements made by the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, in which several unfounded allegations were levelled against the Office of the Inspector-General of Police and the Nigeria Police Force. In light of these claims, it has become necessary to set the record straight.

Firstly, it is important to clarify that there is a subsisting Federal High Court order barring the Nigeria Police Force from participating in the Rivers State elections. This order was duly served on both the NPF and the Rivers State Government. As a law-abiding institution, the IGP instructed the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State to strictly adhere to this court order by refraining from any direct involvement in the election process.

However, in the evening of 3rd October,2024, The commissioner of police Rivers State, received reports that policemen from Rivers State Government house have been deployed to the office of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RIEC) to aid the conduct of the election. This report was also relayed to the Inspector-General of Police who gave clearance to the Commissioner of Police to withdraw the policemen from the Government house and replace with policemen from the Command Operations department. The mandate of the men from the Operations Department was to provide overnight security for the RIEC to prevent any attack on the facility.

It is also important to note that prior to this, there had been series of security breaches in the state following the spate of court orders and counter orders and reactions to them by supporters of the different political parties involved. The response of the Command to secure RIEC overnight was therefore professional and supported by the Inspector-General of Police. For emphasis sake, the policemen deployed to RIEC from the operations department of Rivers State Command on the night of 3rd October 2024 were with the sole mandate to protect the RIEC office from attack overnight. This action was proactive and responsive to intelligence at the disposal of the State Command.

It is therefore shocking to see the state governor storming the RIEC office at night, wrongly accusing the police on lawful duties, deriding the Police institution and using unprintable words to describe the Inspector-General of Police. The Nigeria Police takes exception to the unwarranted outburst of the Governor and particularly the weighty accusations which he falsely levied against the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force and advises caution and decency in the pursuit of individual political goals.

Threatening to shed blood and to burn down the State because of a Local Government election is not acceptable to us. The Nigeria Police Force is committed to the protection of lives and properties and will work with other security agencies in Rivers State to ensure that there is no breakdown of law and order in the State. To this end, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered increased deployment into Rivers State to beef up security throughout the state. Citizens of Rivers state are advised to go about their lawful businesses.
