Obong of Calabar lauds Governor Otu for upgrading schools of Nursing & Midwifery to Colleges of Nursing Sciences

His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, the Obong of Calabar and Grand Patriarch of the Efik Kingdom, has expressed his appreciation to the Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, for upgrading the former School of Nursing and Midwifery to the College of Nursing Sciences.

The monarch praised the governor’s efforts in bringing the institution up to global standards, highlighting the importance of such advancements for the state.

The Obong made these remarks in Calabar while receiving members of the governing council and management staff of the college during a courtesy visit to his palace. He noted his satisfaction with the institution’s activities, particularly its role in encouraging young people to pursue careers in nursing and midwifery.

“I am delighted with what the College of Nursing Sciences is doing for our young ones. The growth and development of this institution will undoubtedly elevate the nursing profession in our state,” the monarch stated.

His Eminence pledged his support for the college and announced his commitment to participate in the upcoming 2024 matriculation ceremony. He also expressed interest in forming a partnership with the institution to ensure its continued success.

The chairman of the Governing Council, Dr Christy Essien, led the delegation, which included the college provost, Mrs Joy Nelson, and other key management staff.

During the visit, Dr Essien informed the Obong and his council of the 2024 maiden matriculation ceremony of the College of Nursing Sciences, Calabar.

She emphasised that the college had already produced numerous certified nurses and midwives, many of whom are currently practising both within Nigeria and internationally.

The Provost of College of Nursing, Calabar, Mrs Joy Nelson in a statement stated, “I am delighted to report that I led a team from the management of our esteemed institution to pay a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V. We were warmly received by His Majesty and had a fruitful discussion.

“We expressed our gratitude for his continuous support and guidance, which have been instrumental in our success. We also extended an invitation to His Majesty to join us for our upcoming matriculation ceremony, and we were honoured when he graciously accepted.

“We look forward to welcoming Him to our campus and celebrating this important milestone together. His presence will undoubtedly make the occasion even more memorable for our students, faculty, and staff.”
