Obong of Calabar, others unite Southern Traditional Rulers

The Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council was officially inaugurated on the 30th of July 2024, signalling a new era of unity, peace, and prosperity for the Southern region of Nigeria. This council, the fruition of a long-held vision, represents a unified front for traditional rulers across the South, poised to amplify their collective voice and address the aspirations of their people.

The creation of this council fulfils the long-standing aspiration of the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, who has consistently championed the need for a unified Southern monarchial council. His vision for unity among the Southern traditional rulers is now realised, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration and collective action.

The inauguration event was hosted by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State, who served as the Chief Host. The occasion brought together an impressive assembly of royal fathers, political leaders, and dignitaries from across the region and the nation.

The council will be led by His Royal Majesty, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, the Ooni of Ife, who has been appointed as the Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council. His Majesty’s leadership is anticipated to guide the council in uniting the Southern monarchs, ensuring their collective influence is directed toward the region’s growth and the nation’s overall development. Key traditional figures in this newly formed council include:

His Majesty King Dr Dandeson Douglas Jaja, DSSRS, CFR, Jeki V Treaty King, Natural Ruler Amanyanabo of Opobo, who will serve as Co-Chairman,
Eze Dr CI Ilomuanya, CON, Obí of Obinugwu, also serving as Co-Chairman His Royal Majesty Oba (Engr.) Sulaiman Adekunle Bagbade Ayodele, Ilufemiloye Olofin of Isher, the representative of the Oba of Benin, and other traditional rulers.

The Obong of Calabar was accompanied by the Paramount Rulers of Obanliku, Biase, and the Muri Munene of Efuts, all from Cross River State.

The Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council is set to be more than just a body of traditional leaders; it is a symbol of a new era where the collective wisdom and authority of the Southern monarchs will be harnessed to promote regional development, preserve cultural heritage, and contribute to the peace and prosperity of Nigeria.

His Royal Majesty, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, In his inaugural address, underscored the significance of this unity, stating, “When we speak with one voice, we speak with the authority of our ancestors and the power of our people. Together, we can overcome any obstacle and pave the way for a prosperous future for our region and our nation.”

Adding his voice to the occasion, the Obong of Calabar, whose relentless advocacy was instrumental in the formation of the council, remarked, “This council is not just a body; it is the embodiment of our collective will and determination to see our people thrive. Our unity is our strength, and with this council, we are better positioned to safeguard the traditions we hold dear while forging a path toward a brighter future for our region and our country.”

The council is also expected to serve as a vital link between traditional institutions and modern governance, providing a platform for the monarchs’ age-old wisdom to contribute meaningfully to contemporary issues and developmental challenges.

In his speech, Governor Uzodinma said the effort, aimed at fostering regional development, reflects genuine intentions to drive progress across southern Nigeria.

“Beginning in 2013, this journey to unite southern Nigeria for inclusiveness and development alongside our northern brothers is particularly admirable now, when such unity is most needed.

“I urged our Traditional Rulers to sustain this momentum and support the political class in pursuing similar unity for the benefit of our people. I commended their achievement and assured them of my full support to ensure its sustainability.

“I also called on them to remain non-partisan while supporting the Federal Government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, who is diligently working to stabilise the country. Additionally, I charged them to actively implement government security measures in their communities to ensure the safety of all,” Uzodimma said.

The ceremony concluded with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to the enduring values that will guide this council in its historic journey.
