Yakurr, Cross River – The Agoi Nation in Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State has celebrated the fulfilment of promises made by Hon. Oden Ewa, Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, and CEO & Chairman of the Green Economy.
His yuletide visit, which began on December 22, 2024, culminated on January 5, 2025, in Agoi-Ekpo, Ekom-Agoi, and Agoi-Ibami, leaving a trail of hope, unity, and pledges for development.
The visit commenced at the palace of His Royal Highness Attah Michael Mbang in Agoi-Ekpo, where Hon. Ewa and his entourage, including prominent figures such as Chief Barr. Obono Obla and Hon. Itam Ubi Ettah, received a grand reception. Mr Obio David introduced the royal council, after which Hon. Ewa expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and presented gifts, including rice, wrappers, and financial assistance to chiefs, youths, and women.
Highlighting his developmental focus, Hon. Ewa announced a scholarship scheme for 150 Yakurr secondary school leavers to pursue education at the Federal Polytechnic, Ugep, fully funded by his initiative.
The Agoi communities collectively expressed concerns over marginalisation in political representation, lack of additional council wards, environmental degradation due to illegal mining, and poor road infrastructure.
At Ekom-Agoi, His Royal Highness Attah Jeremiah M. Oyira, the oldest clan head in Cross River State, welcomed the delegation. Issues of water pollution from illegal mining were particularly raised, prompting Hon. Ewa to pledge two solar-powered boreholes to provide clean water.
In Agoi-Ibami, His Royal Highness Attah Charles Ikum Ujong echoed similar grievances, receiving assurances from Hon. Ewa that their demands would be relayed to the government. He emphasised using the Green Economy Agency to address deforestation, promote afforestation, and ensure environmental sustainability.
Recognition of Leadership
Hon. Ewa praised Governor Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s inclusive leadership, citing major projects like the recovery of Tinapa Resort, dredging of the Calabar seaport, and advancements in the National Electrification Intervention Project.
He assured the Agoi people that they would benefit from the enhanced power supply, which is pivotal for socio-economic growth.
The Commissioner also highlighted the acquisition of five additional aircraft to improve air transportation, aligning with the state’s vision for sustainable development and economic growth.
Leaders of the Agoi communities expressed gratitude for Hon. Ewa’s unprecedented visit. Hon. Mbang Bassey and others pledged continued support for the government’s policies.
Hon. Oden Ewa’s yuletide tour was more than a ceremonial gesture; it symbolised a renewed commitment to unity, progress, and addressing the Agoi Nation’s challenges.
The communities remain optimistic that this engagement marks the beginning of meaningful change.
