Open Letter: Urgent appeal for fire safety measures within UNICAL community

By Cynthia Maduekwe

Dear SUG & UNICAL Management,

I hope this letter finds you well. As a concerned student, I am writing to bring to your attention the pressing need for the establishment of a fire service unit within our university community. Recent events and past incidents underscore the importance and relevance of having comprehensive fire safety measures in place.

Several years ago, a fire outbreak within our university had severe consequences on offices and crucial documentation. While we are grateful that no lives were lost, the impact on valuable resources was significant. It serves as a stark reminder that preventive measures are essential to safeguard not only physical assets but also the well-being of our university community.

I urge you to consider implementing a robust fire service unit equipped with modern firefighting equipment. This proactive approach is crucial in minimising the potential damage caused by fire incidents and ensuring the safety of our students, staff, and infrastructure. Prevention is undeniably better than cure, and investing in fire safety measures will undoubtedly contribute to a secure and conducive learning environment.

Furthermore, I propose the initiation of awareness campaigns to educate members of the university community about fire prevention practices. Knowledge about fire safety measures and responsible behaviour can significantly reduce the likelihood of fire incidents.

In conclusion, I trust that you will give careful consideration to this matter, recognising the paramount importance of fire safety within our academic institution. Your swift and decisive action will not only protect our university from potential disasters but will also demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of the entire university community.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
