Awka, Nigeria – The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed 22 fatalities from Saturday’s stampede during the distribution of palliatives at the Obi Jackson Foundation in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area.
This figure differs from the 28 deaths earlier reported by hospital workers.
The tragic incident occurred at a venue associated with the foundation run by Ernest Obiejesi of Nestoil.
In a statement on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the Anambra Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam, visited the hospital where survivors of the stampede are being treated.
Mr Itam extended his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
According to the police, investigations into the incident are ongoing, with a commitment to ensuring public safety throughout the festive period.
