Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences over the passing of Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former Supreme Court Justice and esteemed figure in Nigeria’s judiciary.
In a heartfelt message to the Ogwuegbu family, the President also extended sympathies to legal professionals nationwide grieving the loss of this revered jurist, who mentored countless judges and lawyers throughout his remarkable career.
Born in 1933 in Ihitte-Uboma, Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu dedicated over 50 years to the judiciary, culminating in his tenure as a Supreme Court Justice and his service as President of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.
Following Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, he led a Judicial Commission of Inquiry addressing human rights abuses during military rule.
President Tinubu honoured Justice Ogwuegbu’s legacy, recognising his dedication to justice, integrity, and the rule of law.
He commended the late Justice’s influential role in shaping Nigeria’s judiciary into an impartial and principled institution.
Justice Ogwuegbu’s significant rulings on federalism, university autonomy, individual rights, and monetary policy remain benchmarks in Nigerian legal doctrine.
The President offered prayers for comfort for Justice Ogwuegbu’s family and eternal peace for the late jurist’s soul.
