CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – Prof. Francisca Bassey has emerged as the first substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS).
Her emergence followed the approval of the state governor, Bassey Otu, and was contained in a release signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh, on Thursday, 17th July 2025.
According to the release, “The appointment takes immediate effect and follows the recommendations of the University Governing Council after a rigorous and transparent selection process.”
Professor Bassey, a renowned scholar, researcher, and administrator of repute, emerges as the first woman to occupy the office since the institution’s transformation into a full-fledged university.
“Professor Bassey, a seasoned academic and administrator of distinction, brings to the role a wealth of experience, integrity and a deep commitment to advancing higher education.
“Her emergence reflects the administration’s abiding faith in meritocracy and the empowerment of capable Cross Riverians to drive institutional growth and excellence.
“Governor Otu congratulates Professor Bassey on this well-deserved elevation and charges her to provide visionary leadership that will reposition the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) as a hub of academic excellence and innovation.
“The government assures her of its full support as she undertakes this important responsibility in service to the State and nation,” the release stated.
An alumnus of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) with over three decades of teaching, research, and academic administration, Professor Bassey has served in various capacities including Head of Department, Dean, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Her academic contributions span numerous peer-reviewed publications and policy engagements, especially in the field of social sciences.
Her appointment comes after her service as the Acting Vice-Chancellor and at a critical moment for UNICROSS, as the university expands its academic programmes, pursues infrastructural growth, and deepens its industry partnerships.
As she prepares to assume office, Professor Bassey has pledged to work collaboratively with staff, students, alumni, and government to elevate the university’s profile and reaffirm its role as a catalyst for human capital development in Cross River State and beyond.
