The Hellenic Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (POSDEP) is calling for leniency in student expulsion policies ahead of the 2025 deadline for inactive students to be removed from registries.

Under Law 4957/2022, students exceeding their degree time frame are set for expulsion starting September 1, 2025.

While POSDEP supports removing long-inactive students, it urges extended deadlines for active ones.

The federation also calls for universities to decide on extensions, not the government, advocating for faculty-led student advising programs and monitoring of academic performance.

Additionally, POSDEP proposes re-evaluating university admission criteria and improving faculty-student ratios. Additionally, to effectively address student failure and dropout rates, the federation considers it essential to ensure the proper functioning of the academic adviser system. This would facilitate direct interaction between faculty and students, providing a better understanding of their challenges – whether academic, social or personal – with the sole objective of supporting their uninterrupted and successful academic progress.

The Education Ministry has yet to respond.
