Putin Praises Economic Growth and Military Advances at Annual Conference

Vladimir Putin

Moscow, Russia – Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his annual news conference and call-in show on Thursday, December 19, highlighted Russia’s economic growth and the military’s advances in Ukraine, aiming to reinforce his authority and control over the nation’s political landscape.

Putin began by asserting that Russia’s economy is set to grow by nearly 4% in 2024, despite acknowledging inflation rates of 9.3%. He described the economic situation as “stable” despite high consumer prices.

On the military front, Putin claimed significant progress in Ukraine, stating, “The situation is changing radically, we are advancing along the entire front line.” This comes as Russian forces reportedly made gains following Ukrainian incursions into Russia’s Kursk region, which had embarrassed the Kremlin. When asked about the timeline for expelling Ukrainian forces, Putin responded, “We will certainly kick them out,” but refrained from specifying a timeframe.

Hypersonic Missile Capability and Western Tensions

Putin dismissed Western claims that NATO could intercept Russia’s new hypersonic Oreshnik missile, which was recently deployed against Ukraine. He provocatively proposed a “high-tech duel,” suggesting Moscow could announce a strike on Kyiv in advance to test NATO’s defences. “Let’s see what happens,” he remarked with a smile.

Syria and the Fate of Austin Tice

On Syria, Putin addressed the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, revealing plans to meet Assad, now reportedly in Moscow. He pledged to raise the issue of missing American journalist Austin Tice, whose case remains a priority for the Biden administration. “We also can pose the question to people who control the situation on the ground in Syria,” Putin noted.

He also said Assad’s fall was not a “defeat” for Russia, claiming Moscow had achieved its goals in the country. “You want to present what is happening in Syria as a defeat for Russia,” Putin said. “I assure you it is not… we have achieved our goals.”

The highly scripted event showcased Putin’s efforts to project stability at home and strength abroad amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.
