CALABAR (CONVERSEER) – As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, THE BEAGLE NEWS has honoured Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe with its maiden 2025 Hero of Democracy award in Cross River State.
The South-South-based newspaper announced the award on Wednesday, stating that it recognises the senator’s outstanding commitment to democratic values and impactful public service. The decision followed a rigorous editorial review and an independent opinion survey conducted among readers across the state.
In a formal notification dated June 10, 2025, and signed by the Editor-in-Chief, Dr Judex Okoro, and Executive Editor, Dr Anthony Bassey Ekpo, the paper’s editorial board praised Senator Jarigbe for his “resolute defence of democratic principles,” “remarkable contributions to human capital development,” and “numerous empowerment initiatives” that have improved lives, particularly in the Cross River North Senatorial District.
“This honour reflects your continued efforts to foster inclusive and participatory governance, championing policies and programmes that prioritise the people,” the board wrote in the letter.
THE BEAGLE NEWS described the award as part of its broader effort to spotlight exemplary leadership and encourage democratic consolidation across Nigeria, especially as the country continues to face challenges related to transparency and accountability in governance.
Senator Jarigbe, who currently represents Cross River North in the National Assembly, has received widespread commendation for his grassroots-oriented approach to legislation and advocacy. Under his tenure, several development projects, scholarship schemes, and youth empowerment initiatives have been implemented across his constituency.
Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12, commemorates the historic 1993 presidential election regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll. The day honours those who sacrificed for the return and sustenance of civilian rule in the country.
Marking the day with the recognition, THE BEAGLE NEWS urged public officeholders nationwide to emulate Senator Jarigbe’s example by deepening their dedication to the ideals of transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
The editorial board noted that the official date for the presentation of the award will be announced in due course.
