Senegalese lawmaker Mouhamadou Faraba Ngom, a close ally of former President Macky Sall, has been placed in custody following his second appearance before the Financial Judicial Pool (PJF) on Thursday.
Ngom, who also serves as the deputy mayor of Agnams, is under investigation for suspected money laundering, with the alleged amount estimated at over 125 billion CFA francs.
His parliamentary immunity was lifted by the National Assembly on January 24 to allow legal proceedings to move forward.
After his initial hearing on February 13, Ngom was allowed to return home.
However, following his second appearance before the panel of investigating judges, he was formally detained, marking a significant escalation in the case.
Authorities have yet to release further details on the charges, but his imprisonment regional political analyst says, signals intensified efforts to combat financial crimes in Senegal’s political and economic landscape.
