Abuja, Nigeria – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has refuted reports suggesting a nationwide power grid collapse on Saturday, describing the incident as a case of transmission line tripping.
In a statement issued by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company clarified that the grid remained stable despite the tripping of the Osogbo–Ihovbor line at 13:41 hours, followed by the Benin–Omotosho line. The disruptions affected bulk power supply to the Lagos axis alone.
TCN revealed that prior to the incident, the grid’s total generation stood at 4,335.63 megawatts (MW). After the tripping, generation dropped to 2,573.23MW but remained operational, refuting claims of a system collapse.
The affected transmission line outages impacted key power stations, including Egbin, Olorunsogo, Omotosho, Geregu, and Paras. However, supply has been restored to all but the Benin–Omotosho 330kV line, which is undergoing final restoration.
TCN reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s transmission network while cautioning against the dissemination of misinformation, which could undermine public confidence.
The company assured the public of ongoing efforts to build a robust and reliable power infrastructure despite existing challenges.
