Some days, you just want to be somewhere that feels familiar – a place with dishes you know will be perfectly cooked, served by people who welcome you like an old friend. The Black Cat (O Mavros Gatos) in the downtown neighborhood of Pangrati is exactly that kind of place.
Open since 1963, it remains rooted in tradition, even as the neighborhood has transitioned from simple wine taverns offering the cook’s daily fare to modern gastro-bistros and trendy neo-taverns.
In 1991, Giorgos Kolezois, a former waiter at other local tavernas, became the owner. Since 2011, his daughter, Vasiliki Kolezoi, and her husband, Giannis Manthos, have carried on the legacy. Despite these changes, The Black Cat has stayed true to its identity: a genuine Greek taverna offering top-quality meats and dishes that taste like they came straight from a family kitchen.
Vasiliki’s mother, Panagiota, prepares the daily specials, including the house specialty, stuffed cabbage rolls. She also crafts the pies with the expertise of her Epirus heritage. Giannis and Nikos oversee the grill, ensuring the meat is cooked to perfection with an emphasis on flavor and simplicity. Their ingredients are sourced exclusively from Greek farmers: lamb from Vonitsa in Aetolia-Acarnania, Paramythia in Epirus and Mytilene in Lesvos, and veal from Serres and Mount Olympus. The lamb chops – thinly cut and expertly grilled – are among the best in Athens. Other highlights include liver wrapped in caul fat, sliced like tagliata, and served with salt, pepper and garlic oil.
The menu is rounded out with unique Greek cheeses, such as galomyzithra from Crete and galotyri from Zagorochoria.
The warm atmosphere is complemented by playful murals by the 20th century Greek painter Michalis Papageorgiou (known as Doris), depicting cabaret scenes starring a black cat. The wine selection is exceptional for a taverna, featuring 60 labels from Greek and international vineyards, perfectly paired with the dishes.
The Black Cat is the kind of place you’ll want to visit again and again. There’s no pretension – just great food, a welcoming vibe and timeless authenticity.
