MAIDUGURI (CONVERSEER) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made on Thursday during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held in Abuja, where tributes were paid to the former military Head of State and two-term civilian President, who passed away earlier this week.
President Tinubu described the decision as a mark of national gratitude for Buhari’s decades-long commitment to public service.
He highlighted Buhari’s strong ties to the North East region, particularly Borno State, and his lasting impact on both Nigeria’s democratic journey and military history.
According to the President, renaming the university is a way of ensuring that Buhari’s legacy continues to inspire future generations.
Further details regarding the formalisation of the name change and its implementation by the Federal Ministry of Education are expected to be announced in the coming days.
