Cross River: Time for APC stakeholders to visit President Tinubu

As leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in Cross River State continue to await presidential recognition in terms of appointment, there’s an urgent need for the state leadership to take a step further by leading a powerful delegation to visit President Bola Tinubu to tell him the plight of the people.

It’s been almost one year since APC won the presidential election. Within this period, the president has made hundreds of appointments. However, the expectations of the majority of party stalwarts have not been met as Cross River has been treated unjustly.

Maybe the president is not aware. The swift reaction of the President to the intervention of the governor and leader of the party in the state, Sen. Bassey Otu to the call for the review of the last two statutory appointments from the state that went to the opposition can be a basis for a strong argument that the President may not be in the know of the shabby treatment of the state by his administration.

Since winning the election, it’s only Rivers State stakeholders that have visited the President from the South-South geopolitical zone to congratulate and press home some demands. Cross River, which is the only APC state from the region, has not had this opportunity.

With the way the state has been marginalised in terms of appointments so far, it is very important to see the president as the development is alien to what he is known for. As a party man in and out, it’s strange that the only APC state in South-South is counted as first from the back in terms of appointment and many other things in this administration.

Party members have been told that the delay in announcing appointments that may favour people from the state was because of the directive for the partial implementation of the Oronsanye report. But within the period, this information was made public, and now, the president has made over fifty (50) appointments.

Some agencies and commissions like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), et cetera that are supposed to be affected by the partial implementation of the Oronsanye report have since been given new management by the president. What this simply means is that whoever sold this idea to the leadership of APC in the state was not correct.

It is a misnomer that after about one year, the only state with almost ninety-nine per cent success for the ruling APC in the last election has just one non-statutory appointment—an additional ministerial appointment. One of the ministers has been on suspension for four months without a word from the presidency.

One can even argue that the two ministerial slots were based on the conventional practice that where a party has only one state in a geopolitical zone, the zonal ministerial slot is always given to the state. For instance, when Edo was the only South-South state in APC under President Buhari, despite having the national Chairman of APC at the time, it still produced two ministers.

If this school of thought is anything to go by, then it’s safe to say that one year into President Tinubu’s administration, Cross River has not gotten any non-statutory appointment.

From the information available, the Governor has been doing his best to address this but since the expected results are yet to come by, a meeting of leaders of note to the President should be facilitated with a view to addressing this and other sundry issues.

However, before meeting with the president, there’s the need for powerful stakeholders meeting with ex-governors, Cross River National Assembly CAUCUS, ministers, federal appointees, former National Assembly members, ex-federal appointees and other leaders of note in Abuja. This meeting, which should be called by the governor, should brainstorm and agree on certain things, including the spread of federal appointments and other things that will be demanded of the president.

It is important for these critical stakeholders to close ranks in pursuing deliverables for the state as well as streamline interests to ensure that they always speak in one accord. The party can’t afford to go to the president without a harmonised list of demands to make for the state.

Similarly, stakeholders need to discuss frantically about the fate of the second ministerial slot from Cross River State. It’s been four months since the president ordered an investigation into allegations of corruption against the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu. The leadership should seek to know what’s happening.

Obviously, stakeholders can’t impose anything on the president but can negotiate with the best interest of the state at heart.

  • Gov Otu’s APC Zonal Coordinator Appointment: Simply Not Enough

Gov Otu’s APC Zonal Coordinator Appointment: Simply Not Enough

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, yesterday announced the appointment of six governors as zonal coordinators of the party in the six geopolitical zones. Cross River State Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, who’s the only APC Governor in South-South, was appointed as his zone’s coordinator.

Yobe State Governor, Hon. Mai Mala Buni, Kaduna State Governor, Sen. Uba Sani and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak were appointed, on the other hand, as coordinators for North East, North West, and North Central, respectively. Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma
and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, are to coordinate the South East and South West.

Their mandates, amongst others, include promoting harmony, consolidating, and strengthening the Party towards achieving the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

While I congratulate Governor Otu for the appointment or simply say, his tacit official affirmation as leader of the party in South-South, I strongly feel that APC must do more than this. The party should demonstrate in practical terms via more tangible patronage that it appreciates its “Mr fix It” and its only governor in the entire zone.

READ ALSO | Video: Police, pro-Palestinian protesters clash at Biden’s fundraising

Politics is not a game of charity. It’s a game which both hands must wash each other.

In all honesty, Governor Otu has done so much for the party in his ten months in government but has not gotten reciprocal treatment from both the party and the presidency.

A few months ago when APC was looking for a calm, mature and strategic stalwart to lead the party to victory in Imo State, Governor Otu, despite being a first-time Governor was the person the party trusted to do the job. When the party ran into crisis in Edo and wanted someone with the charisma to address the issue, it was Otu, the party entrusted again to restore normalcy. In these two very important but difficult assignments, he delivered one hundred per cent.

With the coordinatorship appointment, the first assignment the party expects of him is to perhaps, get himself a colleague in the zone by completing the work he had started in Edo by galvanising zonal support to deliver APC in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state. With his records in previous assignments, it is safe to say he’ll deliver.

But as he keeps delivering the party, APC and its government at the centre should and must deliver him too.

To address the perceived marginalisation of Cross River APC by the party and the presidency, the first step is to urgently compensate the state for the loss of the National Woman Leader position. It’s an aberration, and it’s totally unacceptable that a governor who has worked so hard to strengthen the party across the country has no representative from his state in the National Working Committee.

Since Edo has collected the National Woman Leader that was zoned to Cross River and Akwa Ibom, the position that was zoned to Edo/Delta should be reversed. Edo and Delta, who are opposition should not have representatives at the NWC while Cross River, the bride of the party in the region, stay with none. It’s an anomaly that should be addressed to give members of the party in the state “Renewed Hope” in the party and the government.

Similarly, since President Tinubu assumed office as the 16th President of Nigeria, he has made hundreds of appointments. Unfortunately, apart from Ministers, only about three statutory ones have come to Cross River. Two of the three had to be changed after protests from members of APC who felt they were meant to strengthen the opposition against the ruling party.

The President approves appointments almost on a daily basis. The very few that have come to the South-South have gone to other states, and as they are counting DGs, MDs, etc, Cross River is still searching for its first. The state has recorded the lowest number of federal appointments. Even when the state was in opposition in the past administration, this was never the case; it wasn’t this bad. The state shouldn’t be seen as a spectator in APC but active participant who should also share in the goodies of being in government.

Gov. Otu should be patronised with appointment slots and not just party assignments. The party should replace the lost Woman Leader position as well as liaise with the Presidency to give the Governor the tools to work with by appointing members from the state into sensitive positions. When APC is strengthened in the zonal coordinator’s state with solid lieutenants, the party will be stronger in the region.

It’s my turn to govern Ondo, says APC guber aspirant

    By Mo Isa

The All Progressives Congress, APC aspirant for the November 16, 2024 governorship election in Ondo State, Olusola Oke, SAN, has said that it is his turn to be governor of the state (Emi Lokan).

Oke stated this on Monday, tasking the National Working Committee, NWC and State Working Committee, SWC of the party to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent primary election, which has been slated for 25 April 2024.

According to AriseTV, Oke, a two-time governorship candidate in the coastal State while officially declaring his intention to contest the race at the party secretariat in Akure, charged the party leadership to guide against any negative tendency that could mar the image, peaceful and transparent conduct of the exercise.

The APC chieftain, who represented Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives in 1992 said he was hopeful of emerging victorious in the contest, noting that all political indices favoured his emergence as the party’s candidate for the position.

Oke, who was also the former Chairman of Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, OSOPADEC, said: “I have come here today to notify you of my intention to throw in my cap again into the contest for the governorship seat of Ondo State on the platform of APC.

“However, Mr Chairman, leaders of our great party, I want to plead that you should conduct a free fair and transparent primary.”

The former commissioner, who represented Ondo State on the Governing Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, said it was his turn to be the governor of the coastal state, stressing that his candidature would cripple opposition parties, boasting that all the political parties in the state would support him and the return would be very massive.

“I’ve contested for this position three times, I lost like Buhari and the fourth time is my turn. Recall that three of us rose at the same time in this state. Mimiko, Akeredolu and I. The three of us are from three different senatorial districts.

“Mimiko took his turn from the central, late Akeredolu took his turn from the North. I am told and I’m glad that the ticket is shifting to the south, so who’s turn is next? It is my turn! I am the only one that can say that, nobody else can say that!!

“There are three ways you know a politician, it is either you’ve been a lawmaker, you’ve been a party administrator or you’ve occupied executive position.

“I have occupied the three. I was once a lawmaker and a party administrator. In the choice of my career, ranging for over 35 years in politics, I’ve gathered experience.

“Because I’ve been a party administrator, I will know how to manage party members as a governor. Because I’ve been a lawmaker, I will know how to manage lawmakers in the state and because I’ve occupied executive positions, I will hit the ground running immediately I’m elected,” he said.

The Federal House of Representatives candidate for the 2022 Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency by-election, Hon. Mike Ede Usibe, has dumbed the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Usibe defeated Barr. Godwin Offiono and Margaret Odey in the PDP primaries that held on Thursday, 3 February 2022, after polling 184 votes as against the latters who scored 45 and 5 votes.

However, Usibe lost the Saturday, 26 February 2022 Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency by-election to Hon. Jude Ngaji after scoring 20,590 votes as against Ngaji who polled 22,778 votes.

On 9 January 2024, Mike Usibe, a former Chairman of Yala Local Government Area and Chairman of ALGON, Cross River State, resigned from the PDP.

In his resignation letter addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman in Igede Ward, Usibe said, “The subject above refers and I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately. This decision is personal and made in good faith.

A month after his resignation from the PDP, Usibe joined the APC, stating support for Governor Bassey Otu as the major reason.

    Hon. Mike Ede Usibe

In a press statement signed by himself on 12 February 2024, Usibe said, “As a Statesman, the decision to support the Government of Cross River State, led by His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, is not only imperative but fundamental to the overall progress of our State. This historic move is a product of choice and conviction, driven by the need to support a government whose vision and programmes are tailored towards moving Cross River State forward.

“Today, there is a significant shift in the thought pattern and attitude of Cross Riverians due to the leadership insight of the Governor and his Team. Leadership is influencing people.

“The decision to join the APC is anchored on my belief in Prince Otu’s democratic credentials. In the recent re-run elections in Obanliku and Yala II State Constituencies, the stakes for the APC were considered high. Yet, the Governor against all temptations, chose not to influence the process. It is a strong statement of commitment to democracy that we cannot and should not wish away even in the face of tempting partisan pressures.

“In addition, the present Government in Cross River State has shown commitment to Agricultural revolution, transparent and good governance, multi-sector policies, infrastructural development and urban renewal, gender equality, environmental sustainability, productive workforce, quality healthcare system, urban-rural linkages, inclusiveness and social justice.

“There is a season and time for everything. I therefore call on Cross Riverians to see this as a movement where we join hands to build the Cross River of our dreams.

“I appreciate my brother and friend, His Excellency, the Deputy Governor Rt. Hon Peter Agbe Odey, for being very forthright and accommodating. I also extol the State Leadership of the APC led by Barr. Alphonsus Ogar Eba for the warm reception accorded me so far. Be assured of my total commitment and loyalty to the APC henceforth, as I have always done in my political and professional life, whenever I believe in a cause. I am truly a ‘Party Man’.

“Finally, I unreservedly and with great conviction announce my formal movement to the All Progressive Congress (APC), alongside my army of supporters, as we bring our wealth of experiences to grow the Party, our dear State and the Country.”
