Olympic kitesurfer Bruno Lobo has rescued a 15-year-old girl, Maria Duarte, from drowning in the ocean.
Lobo, who represented Brazil in the Paris 2024 Games, noticed the girl struggling to stay above the water while he was kitesurfing.
Once Lobo got to the girl, he had her wrap her arms around his neck before he navigated his way to shore with his kite, where the girl was given first aid.
Lobo was given the highest award given by the Maranhão Military Fire Department and was later reunited with the girl, Maria Duarte.
“At that moment, I asked God, and he was an angel in my life,” Duarte said in a video.
“And I am very grateful to him. I did not know the sea and the challenge. The sea is treacherous and you cannot challenge.”
Lobo is ranked 7th in the world for kitesurfing and works as an orthopaedic surgeon.
