The Joint Union Congress of the Police Service Commission has asked the president, Bola Tinubu to relieve the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun of his duties.

The demand by the Union, led by its chairman Adoyi Adoyi, followed the IGP’s rejection of the 2022 Police Constable recruitment list, based on alleged corruption and irregularities in the process.

The Union in a press briefing on Wednesday, backed their demand to the president, alleging that some elements within the police attempted to smuggle over 1000 names into the recruitment list.

Adoyi said, “We begin this press conference with a clarion call on the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu to immediately relieve the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun of his appointment as IGP.

“Our concern comes from the fact that a public officer who misleads the President is causing confusion in the country and may lead to chaos which is antithetical to his duty as a police officer.

“His attitude has become only a replica of the Biblical Haman who in deceiving his principal wanted to wipe out an entire nation but for the tiny intervention of God.

“So we call on the president to responsibly relieve him of his duties for the following reasons.

“We have been furnished with reliable information indicating that elements within the Police Force attempted to smuggle over 1,000 names into the recruitment list.

“This manipulation was a grave breach of the recruitment process and a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of the entire exercise.”

The Union chairman further described the allegations levelled against the commission and staff as “unfounded, spurious, speculative and most irresponsible”, given the manner it was made public.

Adoyi also condemned the police decision to neglect the official channel of communication, thus throwing into the public space the allegations.

Recall that the IGP had demanded a review of the approved list for the 2022 recruitment of Constables.

He raised the alarm on the irregularities found in the released names of successful candidates in the ongoing 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise.

The IGP said it became imperative to go public after a series of complaints and allegations of corruption raised by unsuspecting candidates and stakeholders.

After checking the list, the police said it observed that several names of persons purported to be names of successful candidates were those who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise.

The police said some of the published names on the list contained several names of candidates who failed either the Computer Test (CBT) , the physical screening exercise or both.

The IGP further revealed that it is based on the irregularities that had allegedly marred the process and the brunt of training unqualified individuals that it has raised the alarm to the public.

The IGP said, “The same people who recruited anyhow for the police today will turn round to accuse the police tomorrow of inefficiency when their recruits start messing up.

“The Police therefore has since dissociated itself from the published list and called for a review that will be transparent and credible.”
