8 injured as Berlin police clear pro-Palestinian demonstration

Eight people were injured as police dispersed a large pro-Palestinian demonstration in Berlin on Saturday evening.

One of them was seriously hurt, the Berlin fire brigade told dpa. The police broke up the demonstration after shouts of criminal offences had been heard repeatedly, the police said on request.

The demonstration began in the Steglitz district in the afternoon and moved towards Innsbrucker Platz, with some 600 people taking part in the afternoon, police said.

The fire brigade said five people were taken to hospital with injuries. All reported to the emergency services after the end of the demonstration.

They mostly had circulatory problems and minor injuries. No one sprayed any irritant gas, according to a spokesman for the fire brigade.

In addition to numerous Palestine flags, people at the demonstration held up signs reading “Free Palestine from Israel’s Occupation,” in the rally organized under the banner, “Stop the Gaza Genocide.”

There have been weekly demonstrations in Berlin about the war in Gaza, that began after the unprecedented terrorist massacre of more than 1,200 people in Israel, killed by militants from Hamas and other groups on October 7.

Israel responded with massive airstrikes and a ground offensive. In view of the high number of civilian casualties and the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, Israel has come under international criticism.
