Cross River State Independent Electoral Commission (CROSIEC) has announced 26th October as the main date for the 2024 Local Government Election in the State.
According to Dr Ekong Edet Boco, Chairman of CROSIEC, on Wednesday, the activities for the election is scheduled for 25th September to 26th October 2024.
Boco, while addressing leaders of political parties and journalists in Calabar, said the Commission is empowered with the provisions of Section 197 (1) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Amended), to conduct Local Government elections in the State.
According to him, the mandate is not new to CROSIEC. “Since the return to a democratic system of government, in 1999, about four (4) successful Local Government Elections have been conducted thus in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2020.”
“It is important to note that election is not an event but a process which may take months or even years to accomplish successfully. The process of a successful election is often undertaken by different institutions, without which the selection process may not be acceptable by all and sundry – the Election Management Body (EMB), Government, Political Parties and their members, the Electorate, Judiciary and Civil Society Organisations. The Press all Share in the success or failure of the electoral process.
“Therefore, it becomes expedient for the commission to invite all stakeholders today to reiterate the need for a good and rancor-free election; Elections is not war, so we need a peaceful environment to achieve a credible and acceptable Election in Cross River State.
“Thus, today we bring before you the timetable and notice of Election for the commencement of all Electoral activities for the 2024 Local Government Council Election in the State,” Boco stated.
The Timetable and Schedule of activities for the 2024 Local Government Election is the State as follows:
1. Publication of Notice of Election – 25th September 2024
2. Conduct of Party Primaries including Resolution of Disputes arising from Primaries – 25th September 2024 to 15th October 2024
3. Presentation of List of Candidates – 8th October 2024 to 10th October 2024:
- Collection, completion and returns of CROSIEC Form LGE 001 and 002
- CROSIEC Form LGE 003 (List of candidates whose particulars have been confirmed by the Commission)
- CROSIEC Form LGE 004 (List of Candidates whose particulars have been queried)
4. Collection of Nomination Forms – 11th October 2024 – 13th October 2024
- a) CROSIEC Form 006A
- b) CROSIEC Form 006B
5. Process/Validation of Particulars of Candidates by the Commission – 14th October 2024 – 18th October 2024
6. Publication of final nomination Particulars by the Commission – 20th October 2024
7. Commencement of Campaign by Political Parties – 20th October 2024 to 25th October 2024
8. Submission of Names of polling agents from Political Parties – 14th October 2024 – 20th October 2024
9. Notice of Poll – 24th October 2024
10. Last day of Campaign – 24th October 2024
