Armed robber falls inside well after raiding UNICROSS hostel

A suspected armed robber, identified simply as Bob Jay, met his Waterloo on Friday night after he and his gang members raided a student’s hostel at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Okuku campus.

According to Vanguard Newspaper, the robbers attacked the students in their hostel at midnight and carted away laptops, phones and money and after the robbery, one of the hoodlums fell inside an open well while trying to escape with their loot.

There were many that came around midnight. They robbed all the students in the hostel. They stabbed one student, and broke the head of another with a stick before escaping with phones, laptops and other valuables,” one of the students who gave her name as Regina, told Vanguard on the phone.

She said the well was used by students to fetch water to bathe and wash clothes and has no cover.

“Nobody knew that one of the robbers fell inside the well until dawn when students went to fetch water and saw the man already dead inside.

“They raised the alarm and the community people came and took him out and was identified as one of the robbers and some people said his name was Bob Jay from Mbube, a neighbouring village,” she added.

The source said the police were alerted, adding that they came and took the suspect body away.

Converseer reports that UNICROSS campuses across the state are prone to robbery cases, with the Calabar Campus being the most targeted in the past years.
