German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he intends to maintain strict border controls to limit irregular migration.
“In general, we intend to continue strictly controlling the German borders,” Scholz said in an interview published in Friday’s edition of the Saarbrücker Zeitung.
“We want to limit irregular migration, as I have announced. The numbers have to come down.”
Scholz emphasized the need to reduce the number of people entering the country irregularly and claiming asylum without valid reasons.

He also mentioned the existing border controls, such as those at the border with France during the Olympic Games, which are due to remain in place until September 30.
Stationary border controls have been implemented at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Poland to limit irregular migration and combat human trafficking.
The current border controls are scheduled to remain in place until December 15 for Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland and until November 11 for Austria.
