President Tinubu applauds NIPCO’s investments in Nigeria’s CNG sector

Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has expressed his appreciation to NIPCO Plc for its significant investments in Nigeria’s Compressed Natural Gas, CNG sector, applauding the company’s commitment to the country’s energy transition efforts. The President made these remarks during a meeting with NIPCO executives at the State House in Abuja.

President Tinubu commended NIPCO for its contributions to the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), which aims to promote CNG as an alternative fuel source and reduce the nation’s dependence on petrol. He acknowledged NIPCO’s role as a key player in Nigeria’s energy transition, noting that such investments align with his administration’s focus on energy security, economic diversification, and a cleaner, more affordable energy future for Nigerians.

“Public-private partnerships like this are essential for achieving our goals,” Tinubu stated. “With the ‘Switch to CNG’ campaign, NIPCO has been instrumental in raising public awareness and providing affordable CNG conversion kits even before the Presidential CNG Initiative’s official launch.”

The President emphasised the importance of the CNG initiative, highlighting that CNG offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly fuel alternative. He noted that Nigeria’s motorists face the option of buying petrol at N1,000 per litre or switching to CNG at N200 per Standard Cubic Metre. As an additional incentive, the government is offering free conversion kits to commercial drivers looking to transition from petrol to gas.

“NIPCO’s investments are helping us move towards a more sustainable and affordable energy future,” President Tinubu said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for private sector investments. He encouraged NIPCO to continue its innovative approach, contributing to the expansion of Nigeria’s CNG infrastructure and supporting broader goals within the energy sector.

Ramesh Kasangra, NIPCO’s director, led the company’s delegation at the meeting and expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support of the CNG sector. Kasangra assured the President of NIPCO’s dedication to supporting Nigeria’s energy transition and revealed that the company is ready to invest further in infrastructure to make CNG more accessible across the nation.

“NIPCO has been committed to Nigeria’s progress across various sectors for over four decades, and we are here for the long term,” Kasangra said.

The meeting underscored the vital role of private sector collaboration in achieving Nigeria’s energy transition goals, with both parties committing to sustained efforts in making cleaner energy solutions widely available and affordable.
