Calabar, Cross River State – Ahead of the Local Government Elections set for Saturday, November 2, 2024, the Cross River State Command, led by Commissioner of Police CP Gyogon Augustine Grimah, has issued an order restricting movement across all 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) within the state.
The restriction will take effect from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Election Day, November 2, 2024.
This measure, according to the Commissioner, is aimed at ensuring the security and orderly conduct of the election process, allowing citizens the opportunity to cast their votes in a peaceful environment.
The directive prohibits all non-essential travel within the state during the restricted hours. However, exemptions will be granted to those on critical duties, including medical personnel, accredited election observers, and security personnel.
The Cross River Police Command has emphasised the importance of public cooperation with this directive and has urged citizens to avoid any actions that could disrupt the peace or interfere with the election’s success.
In his statement, CP Grimah assured the public that the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, is committed to the protection of lives and property and to maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
The Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, reiterated the appeal for citizens to abide by the movement restrictions and to support law enforcement in ensuring a peaceful election day.
The Commissioner further reassured residents of the Command’s dedication to a credible and transparent election process.
This restriction, seen as a proactive step by authorities, aims to create a safe atmosphere for voters and maintain order across the state as Cross Riverians participate in their local government elections.
