Another year for eternal Thomas Müller at Bayern?

Munich, Germany – Thomas Müller scored, made a crucial block and helped his coach in a post-match interview. No wonder Bayern Munich may be tempted to have their talisman around for another year.

Thomas Müller has shown once again on and off the pitch how important he remains for Bayern Munich even in the dusk of his career, and it appears that coach Vincent Kompany would like to have him around for another year.Müller scored the go-ahead goal in Tuesday’s 5-1 Champions League triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk. At the other end he denied the Ukrainians a seemingly assured goal with a spectacular clearance – of which he was immensely proud.

“That was better than the goal, I’ll tell you that. As an attacking player, you don’t see a save like that every day. I think you could see it in my eyes that it was a lot of fun.

“I actually had a good view of it and I thought: Now it’s going in. And then I got a foot on it.”

Final season or not?

Bavarian Müller, 34, does not get the same amount of playing time as in the past but he remains a face of the club as a fan favourite, with his unconventional moves up front, and a vast experience at the club where he rose through the academy and has been in the first team since 2008, winning countless titles including trebles in 2013 and 2020.

The latest contract of the 2014 World Cup winner expires after the season, and it is not clear so far what happens then.

But Kompany said: “It has always been clear that he will continue to play a very important role for us. Even if he no longer plays every minute. But he’s still a player with a big influence, not just on the pitch.

“His goal shows the quality he’s always had in his career. Being in the right place at the right time and then scoring very efficiently,” he added as Müller scored for a 16th Champions League season.

Another final at home

Bayern seek titles again after a rare season without silverware, topping the Bundesliga and aiming for glory in the Champions League where the final is in their home stadium.

Müller has unfinished business in this respect, having been on the team and scored in the 2012 final at the same place which Bayern lost on penalties against Chelsea.

When Kompany was asked about the final he did not quite get the question but Müller stood right next to him and was happy to help.

“He wanted to know whether we want to win the Champions League, and yes, we do, but there’s still a long way to go,” Müller said.
