Berlin, Germany – Germany’s Katharina Schmid, a multiple world champion and World Cup winner, has revealed she may retire from ski jumping after the current season to focus on starting a family.
The 28-year-old athlete, who got married last year, said, “It is clear for me that I want to plan a family when I retire. I will discuss it with my husband after the season.”
Schmid had previously considered retirement during the summer but decided to compete for at least one more season. Currently, she leads the World Cup standings after winning three of the five events so far this season. She is now set to compete in the Two Nights Tour in Germany, with events in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf this week.
With an illustrious career spanning seven world championship golds, one silver, and a bronze, as well as two Olympic silver medals, Schmid has firmly established herself as one of the sport’s greats. She has also claimed 18 World Cup victories but is yet to secure the overall World Cup title.
Should she retire, Schmid will leave behind a legacy of exceptional achievements in ski jumping while taking the next step in her personal life.
