Lagos, Nigeria – Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, claiming they disproportionately benefit the elite while leaving ordinary Nigerians in hardship.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Rhodes-Vivour accused the federal government of prioritising luxury and wastefulness over the well-being of citizens.
He highlighted rising transportation and food costs, which now consume over 70% of many Nigerians’ income, leaving little for other essentials such as housing.
Economic Reforms and Widespread Hardship
Since assuming office, President Tinubu has implemented major economic policies, including the removal of petrol subsidies and the floating of the naira. While aimed at addressing systemic issues, these reforms have exacerbated inflation, particularly in food prices.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), food inflation surged to 39.93% year-on-year in November 2024, up from 39.16% in October. Staples such as rice, maize, bread, and cooking oil have seen sharp price increases, pushing more Nigerians into poverty.
Rhodes-Vivour alleged that these policies primarily favour bankers, government officials, and associates of the President, particularly through foreign exchange gains, while the masses bear the brunt of the economic strain.
A Call for Unified Opposition
In addition to addressing the current economic challenges, Rhodes-Vivour emphasised the importance of political unity among opposition parties to counter what he termed “state capture.” He warned that a fragmented opposition in 2027 would be ineffective in challenging the entrenched power structure.
“I believe that if all parties do not come together, it is going to be a waste of time running in 2027 because there is a full state capture happening in this country now,” he said.
2027 Governorship Ambition
Rhodes-Vivour also confirmed his intention to contest the Lagos State governorship again in 2027, stating, “By God’s grace, yes.” However, he did not clarify whether he would remain with the Labour Party or explore other political platforms, noting his immediate focus on strengthening the LP.
As Nigerians grapple with economic challenges, the debate over Tinubu’s reforms and the political strategies for the 2027 elections are expected to remain key topics in national discourse.
