Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced February 1, 2025, as the commencement date for enforcing third-party insurance laws for all vehicle owners.
This was disclosed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, during a meeting with the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, and his team at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The NAICOM delegation included key officials such as Dr Usman Jankara (Deputy Commissioner, Technical), Mr Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon (Deputy Commissioner, Finance and Administration), and Dr Talmiz Usman (Director, Legal, Enforcement, and Market Development), among others.
During the meeting, Mr Omosehin congratulated the IGP on the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited and emphasised the critical role of third-party insurance in protecting road users. He solicited the support of the NPF in ensuring nationwide compliance with compulsory third-party insurance regulations.
The IGP reaffirmed the NPF’s commitment to upholding insurance laws, citing Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which mandate all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance before operating on public roads. He urged Nigerians to comply, noting that violations could result in imprisonment, fines, or both.
The enforcement aims to ensure the protection of lives and property and improve public road safety. The IGP reiterated the NPF’s readiness to collaborate with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of this policy.
Nigerians are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the law and secure third-party insurance coverage ahead of the enforcement date to avoid penalties.
