Kim Björkegren Named Head Coach of Ghana’s Black Queens

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new Head Coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team.

Björkegren takes over from Nora Hauptle, whose Black queens tenure ended in December 2024.

A UEFA License A coach with 18 years of experience, Björkegren brings a wealth of expertise to the role. He began his career as a player with Swedish club Åtvidabergs FF in the Allsvenskan, but an injury at age 22 forced him to transition into coaching.

Björkegren has enjoyed notable success in women’s football, including winning the Cyprus Women’s League with Apollon Ladies and the Swedish Damallsvenskan with Linköpings FC.

His accomplishments earned him the Coach of the Year award in Cyprus for the 2020-2021 season. Additionally, he shares the record with Sven-Göran Eriksson as the second Swedish coach to win domestic titles in two different countries.

His coaching experience spans multiple countries, including roles with the Finland Women’s National Team as a scout and analyst, coaching Beijing BG Phoenix in the Chinese Women’s Super League, and serving as Technical Director at Manila Digger FC in the Philippines. Most recently, he managed Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.

The GFA expressed confidence in Björkegren’s ability to elevate the Black Queens, citing his wealth of experience in women’s football, along with his background in education and sports psychology.

The full technical team of the Black Queens comprises:

  • Head Coach: Kim Lars Björkegren
  • First Assistant Coach: Charles Sampson
  • Second Assistant Coach: Anita Wiredu
  • Goalkeepers Coach: Nassamu Yakubu
  • Athletic Coach: Enoch Jordan Daitey

The medical team will be led by Kate Boachie-Agyemang, supported by team nurse Asinawu Abubakari and physiotherapist Margaret Foli. Drucilia Arthur will oversee the welfare of the team, while Patience Nana A. Quarshie and Adwoa Bayor will manage equipment.

Additionally, Ronnie Bergdahl, an experienced video analyst, has been appointed to provide technical support.
