CALABAR – The Cross River State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has publicly distanced itself from a recent protest held at the headquarters of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) in Calabar.
In a press release signed by the Council’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Melchizedek David, the NYCN clarified that the protest, which took place on 16 January 2025, was not sanctioned by the organisation. According to the statement, the group of protesters, who identified themselves as “Young people from the 18 Local Government Areas of Cross River State,” are unknown to the council.
The NYCN emphasised that it neither authorised any member, at the state or local government levels, to participate in or lead the protest. The organisation further stressed its commitment to ensuring that activities involving youths within its jurisdiction are properly informed and coordinated to prevent possible hijacking by miscreants.
The council acknowledged the concerns surrounding insufficient power distribution in Cross River State and urged PHED and other relevant agencies to address the persistent energy challenges with urgency and commitment. However, it maintained that dialogue remains the most effective means of resolving disputes.
“As the umbrella youth body in Nigeria and Cross River State, we believe in dialogue over protest as a means of settling disputes,” the statement read. The NYCN reiterated its dedication to fostering peaceful engagement and highlighted its ongoing state-wide tours to promote dialogue as a key strategy for conflict resolution.
The Council’s position reflects its commitment to constructive engagement and its efforts to maintain peace and order while advocating for the interests of young people in the state.
