EXCLUSIVE: Critically Ill Nigerian Inmates in Ethiopian Prison Reportedly Neglected and Denied Medical Care by Officials

Some of the inmates who spoke to SaharaReporters appealed to the Nigerian government to come to their rescue.

Nigerians arrested for various offences in Ethiopia have once again raised concerns about alleged mistreatment by authorities in the host country.

They have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in their plight.

SaharaReporters gathered that over 300 Nigerians are presently languishing at Kaliti prison, a maximum-security prison in Addis Abba, Ethiopia.

Some of the inmates who spoke to SaharaReporters appealed to the Nigerian government to come to their rescue.

They claimed many of them have fallen ill due to malnourishment.

The inmates were more concerned about one of them identified as Basil Lawrence, whom they claimed had been sick for some days.

Rather than giving him immediate medical attention, he was left untreated despite his obvious sickness, one of them told SaharaReporters.

“Several inmates in the facility have fallen ill due to malnourishment. We’re fed once a day with white rice, without sauce, all year round.

“One of our Nigerian brothers, Basil Lawrence Ilobi is still down with a stroke, yet no treatment,” one of them said.

In 2023, two Nigerians, Chizoba Eze and Uchenna Nwanneneme, died in the same Kaliti Prison following alleged physical aggression and poor medication.
