Lagos Government Shuts Down Oshodi Pedestrian Bridge Due to Safety Concerns

The Lagos State Government has ordered the immediate closure of the pedestrian bridge connecting Oshodi bus terminals two and three.

Concerns about the structural integrity of the bridge prompted the directive, which was announced on Friday by Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the Commissioner for Transportation.

The government’s decision comes as a proactive measure to prevent potential accidents and safeguard the lives of the thousands of commuters who use the bridge daily. Osiyemi explained that the contractor responsible for the bridge’s initial construction has been directed to secure the entrances with concrete barriers to block access.

“This action is necessary to protect pedestrians who rely on the infrastructure. The safety of Lagosians is our priority, and this precautionary measure underscores our commitment to their well-being,” Osiyemi said.

The commissioner also revealed that the closure will allow for a thorough structural assessment of the bridge to determine whether repairs or complete reconstruction are required. The evaluation process will ensure the bridge meets the highest safety standards before it is reopened to the public.

In the interim, pedestrians have been advised to use an alternative pedestrian bridge located just 30 meters away. Osiyemi urged residents to cooperate with the government’s efforts to ensure their safety, emphasizing that the inconvenience is a small price to pay for avoiding potential disaster.

Commuters at Oshodi, one of Lagos’s busiest transportation hubs, expressed mixed reactions to the announcement.

The Oshodi pedestrian bridge, which links the bustling terminals two and three, has been a critical part of the area’s transport network. The government’s move to address its structural concerns signals a broader commitment to maintaining infrastructure safety across the state.
