Sources told SaharaReporters that the manhunt was initiated by Force Spokesperson Adejobi after days of deliberation and persistent appeals to Egbetokun to take action against the activist.

Human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has described Nigeria’s Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, as a palace jester who is not supposed to be found in any environment where serious business is going on.

On Wednesday, while accompanied by his legal team, Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), made this statement as the Nigeria Police prosecuted him for calling the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, an ‘illegal IG’.

The police earlier invited the activist over a police extortion video taken on the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Access Road in Lagos.

He said, “Muyiwa is not supposed to be anywhere near any serious business except in the palace where he is a jester.”

SaharaReporters had reported that the police had lauuched a manhunt for Sowore, following the video he recorded during an altercation with police officers in Lagos.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the manhunt was initiated by Force Spokesperson Adejobi after days of deliberation and persistent appeals to Egbetokun to take action against the activist.

The police eventually formally invited Sowore for questioning but when he honoured the invitation, he was detained, and later charged with alleged cybercrime.

The police initially demanded that he provide a level 17 officer as surety and surrender his passport. However, they later reduced the requirement to a level 16 officer, which the human rights activist described as an insult from the Inspector General of Police, Egbetokun.
