The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has raised serious concerns over the Federal Government’s proposed plan to use Point of Sale (POS) machines for toll collection at newly introduced tollgates on major highways, warning that the method could lead to traffic congestion, security threats, and public inconvenience.
In a press statement issued on Sunday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Khalid Arewa, the ZLP commended the government’s initiative to reintroduce tollgates on key highways, such as the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano route, for road maintenance and development. However, the party criticized the proposed toll collection method, describing it as flawed and potentially problematic.
“We support the initiative, as stated by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, to ensure the roads are properly maintained upon completion,” the ZLP stated. “However, we express concerns regarding the proposed methodology of collecting tolls using POS machines, which may lead to traffic congestion, security threats, and inconvenience to citizens.”
The party argued that relying on POS machines for toll collection could create bottlenecks at toll plazas, especially during peak travel periods, and expose citizens to security risks, including potential fraud and theft. It also highlighted the likelihood of technical failures, which could further disrupt traffic flow and frustrate road users.
“In light of these concerns, the ZLP urges the government to reconsider the collection methodology and explore alternative solutions that prioritize efficiency, safety, and citizen convenience,” the statement added.
