Nigerian chant performance artist, broadcaster and writer, Amarachi Attamah, has opined that a groom pouring away the drink given to him by his bride during a traditional wedding symbolizes “rejection.”

According to Igbo custom, grooms are supposed to drink the bride’s palm wine as a symbol of acceptance and commitment.

However in recent times, some grooms have been seen pouring the drink on the ground over fear of poisoning.

“Are you aware that in Igbo cosmology, pouring away the drink handed to you by your bride symbolizes rejecting her—essentially a divorce before the marriage even begins?” she wrote.
